Matthew the apostle wrote, “Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve. And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? And he answered and said, He that dips his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me. The Son of man goes as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born”, and in chapter twenty-six and verse twenty-five of his book, Matthew writes how Judas asked Jesus, “Master, is it I?” where we read:
Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, You have said.
The verse reads, “Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I?” Matthew began words, “Then Judas” which means “at that time and moment Judas whose name means he shall be praised”, “which betrayed him” or “who delivered up treacherously and committed Jesus to the chief priests”, “answered” which means “responded and began to speak” “and said” or “and uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked”, “is it I” which means “is the one who will betray Jesus me”? Matthew shared how Judas asked Jesus if He was the one who would “betray” Him.
The verse continues, “He said unto him, You have said.” Matthew added the words, “He said” which means “Jesus uttered, declared, proclaimed and answered” “unto him” or “Judas”, “you have said” which means “you have spoken, answered and declared it”. Matthew shared how Jesus said Judas was the one to betray Him.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we discover how Judas wondered whether He would “betray” Jesus. Jesus answered Him directly - “you said it” or “Yes”. We can imagine the look upon Judas' face when Jesus agreed with his question, and we wonder if this was Judas' opportunity to change his mind. The question of Judas should be upon the lips of every person who considers a relationship with Jesus. Who will be the next one to “betray” Jesus? Will they “betray” Him like Judas or yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” and receive “everlasting life” when they do?
Next time Matthew shares how, “Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, take, eat; this is my body”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
