Matthew the apostle wrote, “Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve. And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? And he answered and said, He that dips his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me. The Son of man goes as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It had been good for that man if he had not been born. Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, You have said. And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body”, and in chapter twenty-six and verse twenty-seven of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus, “took the cup … saying, drink you all of it” where we read:
And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink you all of it;
The verse reads, “And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, ...” Matthew began words, “and he took the cup” which means “and Jesus lay hold of the cup”, “and gave thanks” or “and was expressed gratitude, grace and gratefulness”, “and gave it” which means “and granted, bestowed, supplied and furnished the cup” “to them” or “to the disciples”. Matthew shared how Jesus next took a “cup” and was “grateful” for it as He passed it to all of His disciples.
The verse continues, “... saying, Drink you all of it;” Matthew added the word, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “drink you” or “imbibe” “all of it” or “each, every, the whole and every drop of the cup”. Matthew shared how Jesus wanted His disciples to drink every drop of the contents of the “cup” for which He “gave thanks”.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we realize this “cup” represented Jesus' blood and was the “blood of the New Covenant” which Jesus would give for the “salvation” of mankind. His desire was for all people to receive Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and He would “bleed”, be broken and die for that to occur. Let all who read these words understand the importance of receiving Jesus' “cup” that represents His sacrifice for every one of them.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus says, “this is my blood of the new testament”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
