Jeremiah's Prophesy Concerning a Potter's Field - Matthew 27:10

Matthew the apostle wrote, “Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see you to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse ten of his book, Matthew wrote more of how the words of Jeremiah (Zechariah's) prophesy were “fulfilled” about a “potter's field” where we read:

And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.

The verse reads,And gave them for the potter's field, ...” Matthew began words, “and gave them” which means “and bestowed, granted, furnished, supplied and used the thirty coins” “for the potter's field or “to purchase the land that belonged to a potter”. Matthew shared more of the prophesy concerning using the “thirty silver coins” to purchase the “potter's field”.

The verse continues, “... as the Lord appointed me.” Matthew added the words, “as the Lord” or “according and just as he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title for God the Messiah”, “appointed me” which means “prescribed, constituted, put in order, commanded and arranged”. Matthew shared how the “arrangement and command” given was “fulfilled” when the “religious leaders” purchased the “potter's field” for “thirty silver coins”.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus was confirmed to be the Messiah again because the “religious leaders” purchased a “potter's field” with the “thirty silver coins” which were thrown down by Judas. They paid Judas to “betray” Jesus, and afterwards Judas “repented” and cast the coins down in the temple before the “religious leaders” as he declared he had “betrayed innocent blood”. God so loves people that He allowed His Son Jesus to be “betrayed” for “thirty pieces of silver”, and when those coins were returned, as a completion to the scriptures, they were used to buy a cemetery for the poor. Though this prophesy was from “Zechariah” rather than Jeremiah, (See Zechariah 11:12-13), we know God desires to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and those who are wise shall not only consider all these things, but shall invite Jesus into their hearts and lives to be their personal “Christ, Savior and Lord”.

Next time Matthew shares how, “Jesus stood before the governor”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
