Jesus Accused and Answered Nothing - Matthew 27:12

Matthew the apostle wrote how “Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Are you the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, You said it”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse twelve of his book, Matthew wrote, “when” Jesus “was accused … answered nothing” where we read:

And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.

The verse reads, “And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, ... Matthew began words, “and when” which means “and at the time and moment” “he was accused or “Jesus was charged with offenses” “of the chief priests” which refers to “by the high priests” “and elders” or “and the advanced in life, seniors and members of the great council or Sanhedrin”. Matthew referred the time when Jesus was “charged with offenses” by the “high priests” and “religious leaders”.

The verse continues, “... he answered nothing. Matthew added the words, “he answered” or “Jesus responded, remarked and spoke” “nothing” which means “not a single word”. Matthew shared how Jesus did not respond to the “accusations” of the “religious leaders”.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus remained “silent” before His “accusers”. The prophet Isaiah wrote, He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth” (See Isaiah 53:7), and once again, Jesus fulfilled another scripture concerning the Messiah. Though He was “charged with many offenses”, Jesus did not provide a defense or answer any of them. God allowed His Son Jesus to endure these things so people could be “saved” from the eternal death of “sin”, and without Him bearing these charges, no one would be “saved”. Those who look into these things shall see over and over again that Jesus is indeed the Christ, the Messiah, who came into the world to “seek and to save that which was lost” (See Luke 19:10), and yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Matthew shares how Pilate asks Jesus, “do you not hear how many things they witness against you?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
