His Blood Be Upon Us and Our Children - Matthew 27:25

Matthew the apostle wrote how Pilate the governor asked, “What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. And the governor said, Why, what evil has he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see you to it, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse twenty-five of his book, Matthew wrote, “all the people” “answered, and said”, “His blood be on us, and on our children” where we read:

Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

The verse reads, “Then answered all the people, and said, ... Matthew began words, “Then answered” which means “at that time and moment responded and began to speak” “all the people or “each, every, the whole and everyone of the multitude who were gathered before Pilate”, “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed”. Matthew shared how everyone in the crowd before Pilate began to respond to him with the following words.

The verse goes on to say, “... His blood be on us, and on our children.” Matthew continued with the words, “His blood” or “Jesus' bloodshed” “be on us” which means “exist and rest upon the multitude”, “and on our children” or “and upon the offspring and progeny of the multitude”. Matthew shared how the “crowd” of people were so worked up as they called for Jesus' crucifixion they called for the “blame and responsibility” of His death to be upon them and their future generations.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how influential the “religious leaders and elders” were over this crowd. Like a riotous rant, the multitude called for the death of Jesus and were not afraid to have themselves and their “children” to blame, and yet, Jesus not only created all of them but would also die for the sins of every one of them. God loves people, and although they “cry out” against Him with outrageous statements, He will still forgive them for their “sins” and provide them with “everlasting life” when they repent and put their faith and trust in Him.

Next time Matthew wrote how Pilate, “released … Barabbas unto them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
