Matthew the apostle wrote how a woman came to Jesus, “having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat. But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, to what purpose is this waste? For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble you the woman? for she has wrought a good work upon me. For you have the poor always with you; but me you have not always”, and in chapter twenty-six and verse twelve of his book, Matthew wrote how Jesus said, “she did it for my burial” where we read:
For in that she has poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.
The verse reads, “For in that she has poured this ointment on my body, ...” Matthew began with Jesus' word, “for in that ” which means “because, since and on account of her act” “she has poured” or “the woman with the alabaster box poured” “this ointment” which means “the perfumed oil or myrrh” “on my body” or “upon Jesus' physical body”. Matthew shared how Jesus recalled how the woman poured out the “perfumed oil” on His head
The verse continues, “... she did it for my burial.” Matthew added the words, “she did it” which means “the woman performed, rendered and appointed the pouring of the ointment” “for my burial” or “for the purpose of Jesus' preparation for funeral adornment such as baths, vestments, flowers, wreathes and libations”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the woman performed this act to prepare His body for being buried.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus knew His death was imminent, and the pouring out of this “burial ointment” by the woman was to prepare His body for “burial”. God had a plan to save the world from their “sins” by the death of His Son Jesus upon the cross, and because the scriptures say, “the wages of sin is death”, God sent His Son to die for the sin of the world. (See Romans 6:23) God loves people, and He gave His life through His Son Jesus so they might have “everlasting life” with Him. Let all who read these words yield their lives to Jesus whose “death, burial and resurrection” paved the path of salvation for mankind.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus told His disciples, “Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman has done, be told for a memorial of her”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
