Matthew the apostle wrote how, “Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where will you that we prepare for you to eat the Passover? And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master said, My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples. And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the Passover”, and in chapter twenty-six and verse twenty of his book, Matthew wrote how Jesus, “sat down with the twelve” where we read:
Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.
The verse reads, “Now when the even was come, ...” Matthew began words, “now when” which means “moreover and at the time and moment” “the even” or “the evening time or from six o'clock p.m. to the beginning of night” “was come” which means “happened and came to pass”. Matthew shared the timing for the following event.
The verse continues, “... he sat down with the twelve.” Matthew added the words, “he sat down” which means “Jesus lie at a table to dine and eat together” “with the twelve” or “alongside His twelve disciples”. Matthew shared how Jesus reclined at the table to eat the Passover meal with His twelve “disciples”.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see the beginning of what is known as “the last supper” with Jesus and His disciples. In those days a dining table was near to the floor where those eating would recline upon their sides and eat their meal. Jesus was with His twelve disciples, and He was about to share something very important with them. Those who are wise will yield to Jesus and pay particular attention to what He has to say as they relate to God, and His promise of “everlasting life” is to those who recline and dine with Him. (See John 21:12)
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus says to His disciples, “one of you shall betray me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
