Matthew the apostle wrote how, “Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where will you that we prepare for you to eat the Passover? And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master said, My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples. And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the Passover.” Matthew continued, “Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve”, and in chapter twenty-six and verse twenty-one of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus' told His disciples, “one of you shall betray me” where we read:
And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
The verse reads, “And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, ...” Matthew began words, “and as they” which means “during the time the disciples were consuming and devouring the meal”, “he said” or “Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Verily” which means “truly, certainly and surely” “I say” or “Jesus utters, declares and proclaims” “unto you” which refers to the “twelve disciples”. Matthew shared while the “disciples” were eating the Passover meal, Jesus certified His next statement to His disciples.
The verse continues, “... that one of you shall betray me.” Matthew added the words, “that one of you” which means “a certain one of the disciples” “shall betray me” or “will deliver up treacherously and commit Jesus to the chief priests”. Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples one of them would “deliver Him over treacherously” to the “chief priests”.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus was well informed as to who would “betray” Him to the “chief priests”. We can imagine the expression upon every disciple's face as they heard these words. God's desire is that people submit their lives to Him through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him in faith and belief, He promises them everlasting life. Those who do not receive Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” “betray” His intention for them, and woe be to those who align themselves with Judas.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus' disciples, “were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
