Jesus Before the Governor - Matthew 27:11

Matthew the apostle wrote, “Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see you to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value. And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse eleven of his book, Matthew wrote more of how, “Jesus stood before the governor” where we read:

And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Are you the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, You said it.

The verse reads, “And Jesus stood before the governor: Matthew began words, “and Jesus stood” which means “and Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate was made to stand, be fixed and established” “before the governor or “in the presence and opposite of the leader, guide, ruler, prefect, chief, general, commander and sovereign”. Matthew shared how Jesus was taken before the “governing ruler” of the area of Jerusalem.

The verse goes on to say, “and the governor asked him, saying, Are you the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, You said it.” Matthew continued with the words, “and the governor” or “and the leader, guide, ruler, prefect, chief, general, commander and sovereign”, “asked him” which means “questioned and made inquiry of Jesus”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring, proclaiming and asking”, “are you the King” or “are you, Jesus, the leader of the people, prince, commander and lord” “of the Jews” which means “belonging to those within the Jewish nation”? “And Jesus” or “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “said unto him” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed to the governor”, “You said it” which means “you have affirmed, maintained and spoken it”. Matthew shared how the “governor” questioned whether Jesus thought He was the “ruler of the Jewish people” to which Jesus answered, “you have declared it”.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we discover the next step in Jesus' trial unto death. He is now brought before the “governor” of the land, and the question presented to Jesus is whether He is “the King of the Jews”. Jesus' answer to the “governor” was basically “yes” and that the “governor” had declared it by asking Him the question. God “oversaw” all these proceedings, and He allowed His Son Jesus to endure them because it was necessary for the “salvation” of mankind. Without Jesus bearing these things, no one would be saved, and all who consider these events should ask themselves the same question, “Is Jesus the King of the Jews”?, and if they submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, not only will He be become their ruling King but also will provide them with “everlasting life”.

Next time Matthew shares when Jesus, “was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
