Matthew the apostle wrote after Jesus prayed in Gethsemane, Judas betrayed Him, and the religious leaders and multitudes captured Jesus, “one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear. Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again your sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Do you think that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?”, and in chapter twenty-six and verse fifty-four of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus asked, “how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled?” where we read:
But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?
The verse reads, “But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, ...” Matthew began words, “but how then” which means “moreover and in what way then” “shall the scriptures” or “will the sacred scriptures and certain portions or sections of the Holy Scripture” “be fulfilled” which means “be completed, furnished and supplied”. Matthew shared how Jesus questioned in what way would the “prophetic” “scriptures” concerning His capture, torture and crucifixion be completed.
The verse goes on to say, “... that thus it must be?” Matthew continued with the words, “that thus” or “so likewise and in this manner and way” “it must be” or “the fulfillment of scripture” is a necessity, law, command, duty and equity? Matthew shared how Jesus said it was “necessary” for these things to occur.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus was determined to “fulfill” all the scriptures concerning His capture, torture and crucifixion. Isaiah chapter fifty-three and verse seven says, “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opens not his mouth.” Rather than be “rescued” from this horrible fate upon the earth, Jesus committed to going through this process without resistance so mankind could be “saved” from their “sins” and live forever with Him. Let all who read these words yield their lives to Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord” while they consider what Jesus endured so they might be with Him.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus asks the multitude, “are you come out as against a thief with swords and stave for to take me?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
