Matthew the apostle wrote how, “Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where will you that we prepare for you to eat the Passover?, and in chapter twenty-six and verse eighteen of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus instructed his disciples to, “go into the city to such a man” and tell him, “I will keep the Passover at your house” where we read:
And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master said,
My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.
The verse reads, “And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master said, My time is at hand;” Matthew began with the words, “and he said” which means “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “go into the city” or “proceed and depart to the town and habitation” “to such a man” which means “to a particular male human being”, “and say unto him” or “and utter, declare and proclaim to the man”, “the Master” which refers to “the teacher which by preeminence used by Jesus, as one who showed men the way of salvation and teaches concerning the things of God and the duties of man” “said” or “uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “my time” which means “Jesus' moment, due measure and opportune, right and seasonable time” “is at hand” or “near and at close access”. Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples to go find a particular man within the “city” and tell Him that His “due and right time” had arrived.
The verse continues, “I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.” Matthew added the words, “I will keep” which means “Jesus will prepare, produce and make ready” “the Passover” which means “the feast where the paschal lamb sacrifice which the Israelites were accustomed to slay and eat on the fourteenth day of the month of Nisan in memory of the day on which there fathers, preparing to depart from Egypt, were bidden by God to slay and eat a lamb, and to sprinkle their door post with its blood, that the destroying angel, seeing the blood, might pass over their dwellings” “at your house” or “in your dwelling, habitation and abode” “with my disciples” which means “alongside Jesus' students, pupils and attendants”. Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples to tell the man He and His “disciples” would “make ready” the “Passover” means at His home.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus prepared in advance for this special “Passover” meal with His disciples. He knew who the man in the city was to whom the disciples were to go, and all they needed to tell them was that He wanted to use his home for the festival. God loves all people, and His desire is to “save” them from their “sins” through His Son Jesus Christ. This was His plan from the beginning, and even as He knew this man and his home would be the place to observe “Passover”, He knows every person reading these words and desires to save every one of them.
Next time Matthew shares how, “the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
