Mark wrote how Jesus, “went out from there, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him. And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From where has this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Judah, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him”, and in chapter six and verse four of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus said, “a prophet is not without honor, but in his own country” where we read:
But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honor,
but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.
The verse reads, “ But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honor, ...” Mark began with the words, “But Jesus said” or “moreover and Jesus who is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” which means “unto the people in His own country who were offended in Him”, “a prophet” or “one who is moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman, solemnly declares to men what he has received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation” “is not without honor” which means “is not dishonored, base or of less esteem”? Mark shared Jesus spoke about the “honor” given to “those who proclaim and declare” the word of God.
The verse goes on to say, “... but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.” Mark continued with the words, “but in his own country” which means “except within the prophet's own personal region, territory and arable land”, “and among his own kin” or “and within the prophet's relationships by blood and fellow countrymen”, “and in his own house” which means “and within the prophet's own personal home or family”. Mark shared how Jesus said the prophet has “honor” except within His own country, family and home.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how those who are personally familiar with someone often cannot see the “honor” God has given to them. Jesus Christ is the Messiah of God and His own family and close friends could not see it. Jesus came into the world to “save” people from their “sins”, and if people are so “familiar” with Him they cannot see who He is or what His purpose is among people, they often “reject and refuse” Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Let all who read these words consider whether they judge Jesus with contempt or whether they humble themselves before Him and submit their lives to Him.
Next time we see Mark share how Jesus, “could there do no mighty work”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
