Jesus Does No Mighty Work There - Mark 6:5

Mark wrote how Jesus, “went out from there, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him. And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From where has this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Judah, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honor, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house”, and in chapter six and verse five of his book, Mark writes how Jesus, “could there do no mighty work” where we read:

And he could there do no mighty work,

save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.

The verse reads, “And he could there do no mighty work, ... Mark began with the words, “and he could there do” or “and Jesus was able to perform” “no mighty work” which means “not one single great, powerful or miraculous work in that place”. Mark shared how Jesus was not able to perform any miraculous works within His “own country”.

The verse continues, “... save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.” Mark added the words, “save that he laid his hands” which means “except and whether Jesus put His physical hands” “upon a few sick folk” or “on a small amount of weakened, infirm and without strength people”, “and healed them” which means “and served, cured and restored the people to health”. Mark shared how Jesus “put His hands” on some people who were “ill and weak” and “restored them to health”.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus was limited by the belief of the people within His “own country's”. It is interesting to know that Jesus did “no mighty work” among them, but He still “healed” people who were “sick and ill”. God wants to do “marvelous works” among people, however, their “unbelief in Him” often keeps Him from doing as He desires. People who yield their lives to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” should want to know Him and His ability to do the miraculous, and those whom He “heals” are an additional bonus to those works.

Next time we see Mark share how Jesus, “marveled because of their unbelief”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
