Aaron was the First Lot - Joshua 21:10

In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses, and they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, these cities which are here mentioned by name”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse ten of Joshua we learn how, “the children of Aaron …was the first lot” where we read,

Which the children of Aaron, being of the families of the Kohathites,

who were of the children of Levi, had: for theirs was the first lot.

The verse reads, “Which the children of Aaron, being of the families of the Kohathites, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “which the children of Aaron” which means “that the offspring and progeny belonging to Aaron whose name means ‘light bringer’ and was ”brother of Moses, a Levite and the first high priest”, “being of the families” or “existing from the kinsmen, kindred and relatives” “of the Kohathites” which means “belonging to the Kohathites whose name means ‘assembly’ and was “the descendants of Kohath who was the second son of Levi”. Joshua or the writer referred to the offspring belonging to “Aaron” who were the relatives belonging to “Kohath”.

The verse goes on to say, … who were of the children of Levi, had: for theirs was the first lot.” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “who were of the children of Levi, had” which means “that belonged to the offspring and progeny pertaining to Levi whose name means ‘joined to’ and was “the third son of Jacob by Leah and the progenitor of the tribe of Levites”, owned and possessed”: “for theirs was the first lot” or “because, since and on account that theirs, the children of Levi’s, existed as the primary, chief and foremost portion, share and decision made by tossing pebbles”. Joshua or the writer shared how the offspring of “Levi” received possessions because theirs existed as the primary division, portion or share of the dwelling places.

When we meditate upon words in this verse, we learn how “Aaron’s” offspring as the “Kohathites” received the primary dwelling places provided for the progeny of “Levi”. We shall see the dwelling places they acquired in our next verse, but for now let us observe the accuracy of the scriptures concerning the inheritance among the “tribe of Levi”. Although they would not receive cities and territories for themselves, they were to live among the people of “Israel” to serve Jehovah God and to bear witness of Him to all the people. We too may be involved as Jehovah God’s witnesses when we receive His Son Jesus as our “Savior and Lord who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days”. When we submit to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and help us exist as His “witnesses” of salvation and eternal life within this world. (See John 3:16; 16:13; Acts 1:8)

Next time we learn how, “they gave them the city of Arba the father of Anak”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
