In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse nine of Joshua we learn how, “they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon” where we read,
And they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, these cities which are here mentioned by name,
The verse reads, “And they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and they gave out of the tribe” which means “and they, the children of Israel, granted, bestowed and assigned from the clan or people group” “of the children of Judah” or “pertaining to the offspring and progeny belonging to Judah whose name means ‘praised’ and was the son of Jacob by Leah and the progenitor of the tribe of Judah”, “and out of the tribe” which means “and from the clan and people group”, “of the children of Simeon” or “pertaining to the offspring and progeny belonging to Simeon or Shimeon whose name means ‘heard’ and was the second son of Jacob by his wife Leah and progenitor of the tribe of Simeon”. Joshua or the writer shared how the offspring of “Israel” granted dwelling places to the “Levites” through the offspring of “Judah” and “Simeon”.
The verse continues, “… these cities which are here mentioned by name, …” Joshua or the writer added the words, “these cities” which means “the following dwelling places or places of wakening” “which are mention by name” or “that are called out, proclaimed, uttered and declared through the means of their reputation, fame and glory”. Joshua or the writer shared how the dwelling places distributed to the “Levites” were called out and proclaimed through their fame, reputation and glory.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see how the offspring of “Israel” obeyed the charge of Jehovah God through “Moses” by providing dwelling places within “Judah and Simeon” to the “Levites”. God was fulfilling His word by His people, and He will do the same for us when we yield to His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised from the grave after three days. When we surrender to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and empower us to live according to that truth so our lives may be a witness and blessing to others for Him. (See John 3:16; 16:13; Acts 1:8; Ephesians 1:18; Revelation 4:11)
Next time we learn how, “the children of Aaron …was the first lot”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
