In the book of Joshua, we learned how the children of Israel, “gave to the children of Aaron the priest Hebron with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Libnah with her suburbs”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse fourteen of Joshua we learn about, “Jattir” and “Eshtemoa” where we read,
And Jattir with her suburbs, and Eshtemoa with her suburbs.
The verse reads, “And Jattir with her suburbs,…” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and Jattir” whose name means “plenty” and was “a town in the mountains of Judah” “with her suburbs” or “alongside and accompanied by her, Jatter’s, common and open country or pasture”. Joshua or the writer shared how “Jattir” accompanied by it’s open pasture was given to the offspring of “Aaron the high priest”.
The verse goes on to say, “… and Eshtemoa with her suburbs.” Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “and Eshtemoa” whose name means “I will make myself heard” and was “a Levitical city in Judah” “with her suburbs” or “alongside and accompanied by it’s common and open country or pasture”. Joshua or the writer said “Eshtemoa” and it’s accompanying open pastures were also given to the “Levites” who belonged to the offspring of “Aaron”.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we discover two more dwelling places, “Jattir and Eshtemoa” along with their open pastures were given to the descendants of Aaron known as the “Levites”. God was preparing the “cities of refuge” for those who would need them, and even as these dwelling places were set forward in advance, so Jehovah God has given His Son Jesus to be crucified on the cross for the sin of all mankind and to be raised from the dead after three days. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and to give us the ability to keep that truth so that our lives are a reflection of Him in the world. (See John 3:16; 16:13:Acts 1:8; Revelation 4:11)
Next time we learn about, “Holon, Juttah and Bethshemesh”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
