A Treasure Hid in a Field - Matthew 13:44

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus, “sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. He answered and said unto them, He that sows the good seed is the Son of man; The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity. And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who has ears to hear, let him hear”, and in chapter thirteen and verse forty-four of his book, Matthew wrote how Jesus tells His disciples, “the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field” where we read:

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man has found, he hides, and for joy thereof goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field.

The verse reads, Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; Matthew began with the word, “again” which means “further and moreover”, “the kingdom” or “the royal power, dominion and rule” “of heaven” which means “belonging to the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings” “is like unto treasure” or “is similar and in likeness to a receptacle, repository or magazine in which valuables are kept” “hid” which means “concealed and kept secret” “in a field” or “within a piece of land, bit of tillage, farm or neighboring hamlet”. Matthew shared how Jesus likened the “kingdom of heaven” to a “receptacle or repository for valuable things” that is “concealed” in a piece of land.

The verse continues, the which when a man has found, he hides, and for joy thereof goeth and sells all that he has, and buys that field. Matthew added the words, “the which” which means “that” “when” or “at the time and moment” “a man” which means “a person whether male or female” “has found” or “learned about, discovered and recognized the treasure”, “he hides” which means “the person conceals and keeps it secret”, “and for joy” or “and because of gladness, cheerfulness and calm delight” “thereof” which means “because of it” “goes and sells” or “departs and barters and trades” “all” which means “each, every, the whole and everything” “that he has” or “holds, owns and possesses”, “and buys” which means “and purchases or redeems” “that field” or “that particular piece of land, bit of tillage, farm or neighboring hamlet”. Matthew shared how Jesus said the man who found the “treasure hidden in a field” went out and sold everything he had to purchase that “field”.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see another example given by Jesus as to what the “kingdom of heaven” is like. This time there is a “treasure” that is “hidden in a field”, and a man discovered it. Afterward he concealed it and sold everything he had to purchase that “field”. God desires to save every person in the world, and to Him, they are His “treasure”. Jesus came to give His life for the “sins” of everyone, and because they were a “treasure” to Him, He “sold everything” and paid the price that purchased the world so He might have a loving relationship with them. Let everyone who reads these words know their value before Almighty God and submit to His plan of “salvation” through His Son Jesus today.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus told His disciples how, “the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
