Jesus Did Not Many Mighty Works There - Matthew 13:58

Matthew the apostle wrote when Jesus, “was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Where has this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us? From where then has this man all these things? And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country, and in his own house”, and in chapter thirteen and verse fifty-eight of his book, Matthew wrote how Jesus, “did not many mighty works there” where we read:

And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

The verse reads, And he did not many mighty works there ... Matthew began with the words, “and he did not many” which means “and Jesus did not do a lot of” “mighty works” or “powerful, miraculous and wonderful acts” “there” which means “in Jesus' own city of Nazareth”. Matthew shared how the people of Nazareth did not see Jesus do many miracles in their city.

The verse continues, ... because of their unbelief. Matthew added the word, “because of” which means “for the reason of, since and on account of” “their unbelief” or “the people in the city of Nazareth's unfaithfulness, faithlessness and weakness of faith”. Matthew shared how the “faithlessness” of the people in Nazareth was the reason Jesus did not do many “miracles” there.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how “unbelief” in the people of Nazareth was the reason there were not many miracles performed by Jesus in their city. God desires people to have a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they receive Him as “Savior and Lord”, they shall not only be given “everlasting life” but will also be exposed to His miracles. Doubt brings a lack of God's “mighty works”, but “faith” in Jesus allows for Him to do “exceeding abundantly above all we ask or think”. (Ephesians 3:20)

Next time we begin a new chapter and see Matthew share how, “Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
