Jesus You Are the Son of God - Matthew 14:33

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus fed the multitude which included five thousand men plus women and children. Afterward, “Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it is you, bid me come unto you on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O you of little faith, why did you doubt? And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased”, and in chapter fourteen and verse thirty-three of his book, Matthew shares how “they that were in the ship came and worshiped” Jesus where we read:

Then they that were in the ship came and worshiped him, saying, Of a truth you are the Son of God.

The verse reads, Then they that were in the ship came and worshiped him, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “then they” which means “afterward the disciples” “that were in the ship” or “who were inside the sailing vessel or boat” “came” which means “arose and appeared before Jesus” “and worshiped” which means “and reverenced, made obeisance to and knelt in prostration to do homage to” “him” which refers to “Jesus”. Matthew shared how the remained of the disciples who were on the boat fell down and “reverence” Jesus when the winds immediately “ceased”.

The verse goes on to say, ... saying, Of a truth you are the Son of God. Matthew continued with the word, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “of a truth” which means “in reality and most certainly” “you are the Son” or “Jesus you are the offspring, descendant and posterity” “of God” which refers to “belonging to the trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Matthew shared how the disciples declared Jesus to be “God's Son” as they made obeisance unto Him.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the natural reaction of the disciples was to fall down and worship Jesus after seeing His affect upon the wind. The disciples knew the difficulties they were having in the boat, and the contrary winds had them so afraid they thought they would perish. But when Jesus stepped into their boat, the winds “ceased” and they fell down to “worship” Him. God is all-powerful, and regardless of the storms that arise, He is more powerful than they. Those who are wise will fall down and worship the only One who is able to make any “storm” “cease” and bring calm into their lives once again.

Next time we see Matthew shares how, “they came into the land of Gennesaret”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
