Where Then Has This Man These Things - Matthew 13:56

Matthew the apostle wrote, “And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Where has this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? ”, and in chapter thirteen and verse fifty-six of his book, Matthew wrote how the people asked, “from where then has this man all these things” where we read:

And his sisters, are they not all with us? From where then has this man all these things?

The verse reads, And his sisters, are they not all with us?” Matthew began with the words, “and his sisters” which means “and Jesus' sisters”, “are they not all” or “are not each, every, the whole and everyone of Jesus' sisters” “with us” which means “alongside the people within Jesus' town of Nazareth”? Matthew shared how the people within Nazareth questioned whether Jesus' own “sisters” were with them as well.

The verse goes on to say, From where then has this man all these things?” Matthew continued with the words, “from where then” which means “what origin, source, author or giver therefore and wherefore” “has this man” or “does Jesus have” “all” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of” “these things” which refers to “the speeches and miracles”? Matthew shared how the people within Jesus' city of Nazareth wanted to know the origin and source of Jesus' knowledge and miracle working power.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the people from Jesus' city knew His “sisters” as well. They could not understand where Jesus got His ideas and miracle working abilities. Their familiarity with Jesus caused them to wonder about Him, and this same effect resides in many people today. Because people have heard about Jesus, been exposed to Jesus and know Him culturally, they do not understand the importance of having a personal relationship with Him. Each person is of great value to Jesus, and He came to die for their sins. He desires people to receive Him as “Savior and Lord”, and when they yield their lives to Him, they are promised “everlasting life”.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus, “did not many mighty works there”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
