Why Do You Transgress the Commandment of God? - Matthew 15:3

Matthew the apostle wrote,Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread”, and in chapter fifteen and verse three of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus asked the Scribes and Pharisees, “why do you also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?” where we read:

But he answered and said unto them,

Why do you also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

The verse reads, But he answered and said unto them, ...”. Matthew began with the word, “ but” which means “nevertheless, moreover and” “he answered” or “Jesus responded and gave an answer to their question” “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” or “to the Scribes and Pharisees”. Matthew shared how Jesus responded to the Scribes and Pharisees' question.

The verse goes on to say, ... Why do you also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? Matthew added the word, “why” which means “for what reason and cause” “do you also transgress” which means “do the Scribes and Pharisees neglect, violate, go contrary to and abandon” “the commandment” or “the order, charge, precept and injunction” “of God” which means “belonging to the Godhead bodily which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “by your tradition” or “through and by way of the Scribes and Pharisees' narrative, precept and delivering””. Matthew shared how Jesus answered the Scribes and Pharisees' question by asking them a question concerning their violation of God's “precept and order” through their “narrative, precept and delivering”.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the Scribes and Pharisees' rule was more important to them than the “commandment of God”. Man-made rules never override God's, and when the “Scribes and Pharisees” challenged Jesus, He was quick to question why they were violating God's superior rule. God desires a loving relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they have a relationship with Him, they understand that He is the absolute authority and rule maker in their lives.

Next time Matthew share how Jesus refers to the commandment, “honor your father and mother, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
