Peter Comes and Walks on Water - Matthew 14:29

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus fed the multitude which included five thousand men plus women and children. Afterward, “Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it is you, bid me come unto you on the water”, and in chapter fourteen and verse twenty-nine of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus tells Peter to, “come” where we read:

And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship,

he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

The verse reads, And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “and he said” which means “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “come” or “arise and proceed toward Jesus”. “And when Peter” which means “at at the time and moment Peter” “was come down” or “descended from” “out of the ship” or “separate and apart from the sailing vessel or boat”. Matthew shared how Jesus invited Peter to “come” to Him and Peter stepped out of the boat.

The verse goes on to say, ... he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. Matthew continued with the words, “he walked” which means “Peter ambled and made progress” “on the water” or “upon the waters of the sea”, “to go to Jesus” or “to arise and walk toward Jesus”. Matthew shared how Peter began to “walk upon the water” as he made his progress toward Jesus.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we discover another miracle performed by Jesus. Peter was given the ability to “walk on water” as he began to make his way toward Jesus. God desires this type of faith and trust in Him and His Son Jesus, and when He gives the power, supernatural things may be done. Peter “walked on water”, and this demonstrates once again the power of the Messiah Jesus who came to pay the price for the sins of the whole world.

Next time we see Matthew shares Peter, “saw the wind boisterous” and said “Lord, save me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
