Ananias' Wife Comes In - Acts 5:7

Luke the physician wrote how “a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, and kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? While it remained, was it not your own? and after it was sold, was it not in your own power? why have you conceived this thing in your heart? you have not lied unto men, but unto God. And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him, and in chapter five and verse seven of the book of Acts Luke shared how, “three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in” where we read:

And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.

The verse begins, “And it was about the space of three hours after, ...”. Luke began with the words, “and it was about the space” which means “and after the interval, distance or space of time” “of three hours after” or “pertaining to three hours time” the following happened. Luke shared how around “three hours after” the youthful men “carried out, wrapped and buried” Ananias, the following occurred.

The verse goes on to say, “... when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.” Luke continued with the words, “when his wife” which means “at the time and moment his, Ananias', female spouse”, “not knowing what was done” or “being unaware and without knowledge of her husband Ananias lying to the apostles, dying and being buried”, “came in” which means “arose and appeared before the apostles”. Luke shared at that time the wife of “Ananias”, “Sapphira”, appeared before the “apostles”, but she was unaware of everything that happened with her husband.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn that around “three hours” after “Ananias” died and was buried by the youthful men, “Sapphira”, Ananias' wife”, appeared in front of the “apostles”. We will discover what happens with her in our next few verses, but for now let us consider the concealment of the information concerning her husband. No one made her aware of what happened to “Ananias”, and she was to give an account for her own thoughts and actions before the apostles. God knows everyone and everything because He is an omniscient God. No one hides anything from Him, and He is willing to save everyone who yields their life to His Son Jesus. Let all who read these words submit themselves to Jesus who knows the thoughts, actions and attitudes within every person and continues to desire to have a personal relationship with them.

Next time Luke shares how, “Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
