The One Begging at the Gate - Acts 3:10

Luke the physician wrote how Peter said to the lame man at the temple, “Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I to you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God”, and in chapter three and verse ten of the book of Acts Luke shared how the people, “knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple” where we read:

And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple:

and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him.

The verse begins, “And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple:” Luke began with the words, “and they knew that it was he” which means “and the people in the temple understood, perceived and discerned that this was the lame man” “which sat for alms” or “who was seated and begging for charity and donations” “at the Beautiful gate” which means “at the access and entryway known as blooming and flourishing” “of the temple” or “belonging to the sacred worship place in Jerusalem”. Luke shared how the people who observed the formally lame man as he walked, jumped and gave praise to God knew he was the “beggar” who sat at the entryway known as “Beautiful”.

The verse continues, “and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him.” Luke added the words, “and they were filled with wonder” or “and the people in the temple were influenced, supplied, imbued with astonishment, surprise and stupefaction” “and amazement” which means “and displacement of the mind, bewilderment and ecstasy” “at that which had happened unto him” or “toward what fell to, occurred and came to pass with the lame man”. Luke shared how the people in the temple were astonished and bewildered by what happened to the lame man.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the people in the temple recognized the lame man who was a beggar at the temple gate, and they were bewildered and “amazed” at what happened to him. We can imagine the looks on their faces as this man walked, leaped and cried out praises to God. This man knew he received a miracle, and now his life was a testimony to the power of Jesus Christ through His disciples. Those who are wise will carefully examine what happened to this lame man and surrender their lives to the only One who is able to save and deliver mankind from the “crippling” power of “sin” - Jesus.

Next time Luke shares, “as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
