By the Name of Jesus Christ - Acts 4:10

Luke the physician wrote how Peter spoke the people who gathered together after the lame man at the temple was healed, and many “which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand. And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes, and Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have you done this? Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, You rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole”, and in chapter four and verse ten of the book of Acts Luke shared how Peter said, “by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him does this man stand here before you whole” where we read:

Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him does this man stand here before you whole.

The verse begins, “Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, ...” Luke began with the words, “be it known unto you all” which means “allow and permit it to be acquainted and notable to each, every, the whole and everyone of the leaders who were interrogating Peter and John”, “and to all the people” which means “and toward each, every, the whole and everyone of the people both male and female” “of Israel” or “belonging to the Jewish nation of Israel whose name means he shall be a prince of God”. Luke shared how Peter began to address each and every one of the “religious leaders” and every person who belonged to the nation of “Israel”.

The verse continues, “... that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, ...” Luke added the words, “that by the name” or “because and since through and by means of the name which is used for everything the name covers including the thoughts or feelings which are aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing and remembering” “of Jesus” which means “belonging to Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate”, “Christ” which refers to the anointed One and the Messiah” “of Nazareth” who was from the village which means one separated and was a small village in Galilee” “whom you crucified” or “that you, religious leaders and people of Israel, palisade, drove down with stakes and hung upon a cross until death”, “whom God raised from the dead” which means “who God the Heavenly Father aroused and resurrected apart from the non-living, inanimate, without breath and lifeless”. Luke shared how Peter told the “religious leaders and the people of Israel” that it was through “the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth” who they “crucified” but God resurrected “from the dead” that the following occurred.

Finally the verse reads, “even by him does this man stand here before you whole”. Luke finished this verse by writing, “even by him” or “indeed and also through and by means of him, Jesus Christ” “does this man” which means “does this particular male human being, which was the formally lame man” “stand here before you whole” or “exhibit, present and show himself in front and in the presence of you, religious leaders and people of Israel, sound, restored to health and well”. Luke shared how Peter told the religious leaders and the people of Israel that Jesus Christ was responsible for making the formally lame man who was standing in front of them “healthy, well and sound”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Peter boldly spoke to these religious leaders as he addressed their question by what “power and name” they performed the miracle upon the lame man. Peter made sure they knew it was by the name of “Jesus Christ of Nazareth” that this wonder was performed, and he acknowledged that “Jesus” was the one they “crucified” but God “resurrected” Him. The “power” of the Holy Spirit which Jesus promised was exhibited through Peter and John, and because they believed and trusted in Him, they performed this miracle by the “power” of His “name”. The formally lame man was among them as well which shows us he also was detained by the religious leadership, and his healing further proved a supernatural event had taken place. In the same manner, everyone who yields their life to Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God, and those who are wise will acknowledge the “power” in Jesus' “name” and surrender their lives to Him.

Next time Luke shares how Peter says, “this is the stone which was set at nought of you builders”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
