Let Go and Reporting - Acts 4:23

The physician Luke wrote how Peter and John were arrested for speaking to the people in the temple about the resurrection of the dead. After some discussion between them, the religious leaders put Peter and John away from them and said, “What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle has been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it. But that it spread no further among the people, let us straightly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge you. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done. For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was showed”, and in chapter four and verse twenty-three of the book of Acts Luke shared how Peter and John, “went to their own company, and reported” where we read:

And being let go, they went to their own company,

and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.

The verse begins, “And being let go, they went to their own company, ...” Luke began with the words, “and being let go” which means “and being released and set free”, “they went to their own company” which means “they, Peter and John, arose and made their appearance to their own personal friends and family” and did the following. Luke shared when Peter and John were released by the religious leaders, they “departed” to their personal “family and friends”.

The verse goes on to say, ... and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them. Luke continued with the words, “and reported” or “and brought tidings, word, proclamations and open declarations about” “all that the chief priests” which means “each, every, the whole and everything the principle and high priests” “and elders” or “and ones advanced in life, senior and members of the great council or Sanhedrin” “had said unto them” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed to Peter and John”. Luke shared how Peter and John brought tidings and proclamations concerning everything the religious leaders told them.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Peter and John went back to their family and peers after being released by the religious leaders. When they rejoined them, they told their “own company” everything the religious leaders spoke to them. God's desire is for every person to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they submit their lives to Him, they shall be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and be enable to share whatever happens to them because they believe. Those who are wise will study this event in Peter and John's life and understand God's purpose and plan for the growth of His church through those who believe in Him.

Next time Luke shares how Peter and John's own company, “lifted up their voice to God with one accord”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
