Fear, Wonders and Signs - Acts 2:43

Luke the physician wrote how Peter, “with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers”, and in chapter two and verse forty-three of the book of Acts Luke shared how, “fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles” where we read:

And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

The verse begins, “And fear came upon every soul: Luke began with the words, “and fear” which means “and dread, terror and reverence” “came upon every soul” or “arose, appeared and happened to each, the whole, all and everyone of the seats of the feelings, desires, affections and aversions of the people”. Luke shared how everyone began to have “reverence and awe” toward the disciples of Jesus.

The verse continues, “... and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.” Luke added the words, “and many wonders” or “and a large, great and plenteous amount of portents, omens and miracles” “and signs” which means “and tokens, marks and unusual occurrences which transcend the common course of nature” “were done by the apostles” or “were made ready, performed and produced through the delegates, messengers and ones sent forth by Jesus”. Luke shared how Jesus “apostles” performed a great number of “miracles and unusual occurrences” among the people.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how there was a “holy reverence” among people as the “miracles and signs” were performed by Jesus' “apostles”. The Holy Spirit of God was poured out among the believers, and they were able to do things in supernatural ways that made others know they had been with God. God's desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their life to Him, God will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life. Those who are wise will yield their lives to Jesus in “holy reverence” and allow themselves to be used by God in any manner He desires.

Next time Luke shares how, “all that believed were together, and had all things common”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
