Not Speaking in the Ears of a Fool - Proverbs 23:9

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Eat you not the bread of him that has an evil eye, neither desire you his dainty meats. For as he thinks in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, says he to you; but his heart is not with you. The morsel which you have eaten shall you vomit up, and lose your sweet words, and in chapter twenty-three and verse nine of Proverbs Solomon said, “speak not in the ears of a fool” where we read,

Speak not in the ears of a fool:

for he will despise the wisdom of your words.

The verse begins, “Speak not in the ears of a fool: Solomon began with the words, “speak not” or “do not utter, declare or make a proclamation” “in the ears of a fool” which means “within the physical ears for perceiving and giving audience belonging to person who is a dullard, simpleton, stupid and arrogant fellow”. Solomon instructed his readers and listeners not to make utterances within the physical “ears” belonging to a stupid and arrogant person.

The verse goes on to say, “for he will despise the wisdom of your words.” Solomon continued with the words, “for he will despise” or “because, since and on account that he, the foolish person whether male or female, shall despise, hold in contempt and as insignificant” “the wisdom” which means “the prudence, insight, understanding, cunning and craft” “of your words” or “pertaining to your, the readers and listeners to Solomon's words', utterances, proclamations and declarations”. Solomon said the “fool” would hold the prudent and insightful utterances and declarations belonging to his readers and listeners in contempt.

When we consider Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how we are not to make utterances in the hearing of people who are dullards and stupid because they will hold our insightful declarations in contempt and as insignificant. In other words, our words will be wasted with people who are dullards. God wants us to be wise with our words, and when we speak them, we should consider our audience. God loves us, and when we yield our lives to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us through His Holy Spirit to be prudent with our words.

Next time Solomon says, “remove not the old landmark”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
