The Heavens are the LORD'S - Psalms 115:16

In Psalms one hundred fifteen the Psalmist said, “The LORD shall increase you more and more, you and your children. You are blessed of the LORD which made heaven and earth”, and in chapter one hundred fifteen and verse sixteen of Psalms the Psalmist said, “the heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD'S” where we read,

The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD'S: but the earth has he given to the children of men.

The verse begins with the words, “The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD'S: .... The Psalmist began, “the heaven” or “the abode and dwelling place of Jehovah God”, “even the heavens” which means “indeed the visible skies and atmosphere”, “are the LORD's” or “belong to Jehovah who is the exiting One and the proper name for the One True God”. The Psalmist said the skies and celestial abode of Jehovah God are all possessed by Him.

The verse goes on to say, “... but the earth has he given to the children of men.”. The Psalmist continued with the words, “but the earth” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the country, territory, region, district and world” “has he given” which means “has he, Jehovah God, put, set, granted, bestowed upon, delivered, consecrated and entrusted” “to the children of men” or “to the offspring, descendants and progeny belonging to people both male and female”. The Psalmist said Jehovah God entrusted the world to the offspring of the people who live within it.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist made a declaration concerning the ownership of Jehovah God over the visible skies, atmosphere and celestial heaven, and He entrusted His world to mankind. When He created man, God placed Him in a garden, Eden, to care for His world, however, mankind failed to follow His way. (See Genesis 3) This failure on the part of “Adam and Eve” caused “sin” to come upon all people, and thereby death followed. (See Romans 5:12) God sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross to pay the price for the sins of all mankind, and when we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to be a part of His “earth” and “heavens” according to His purpose and will.

Next time the Psalmist says, “the dead praise not the LORD”, and we shall join together then.
