The Sorrows of Death Compassed Me - Psalms 116:3

In Psalms one hundred sixteen the Psalmist said, “I love the LORD, because he has heard my voice and my supplication. Because he has inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live”, and in chapter one hundred sixteen and verse three of Psalms the Psalmist said, “the sorrows of death compassed me” where we read,

The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell got hold upon me:

I found trouble and sorrow.

The verse begins, The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell got hold upon me. The Psalmist began with the words, “the sorrows of death” or “the bands, portions and pains of travail pertaining to ruin and dying” “compassed me” which means “surrounded and encompassed me, the Psalmist”, “and the pains of hell” or “and the straits, distresses and trouble belonging to the underworld, grave, pit and place of no return” “got hold upon me” which means “secured, acquired, met and encountered me, the Psalmist”. The Psalmist said the bands and travail of dying encompassed him and the trouble and distress of the grave and place of no return met him.

The verse continues, “I found trouble and sorrow.”. The Psalmist added the words, “I found trouble” or “I, the Psalmist, discovered, met, detected and came upon straits, distress and vexation” “and sorrow” which means “grief and anguish”. The Psalmist said he discovered distress, vexation and grief.

When we think through the Psalmist's words in this verse, we see how he referred to the idea of dying surrounding him, and the distress of the grave overwhelmed him. He discovered vexation and grief, and even as we encounter these things, this troubled his soul. We shall see what he does about his vexation in our next verse, but let it suffice us for now to realize God knows when we face difficulties and even death. God loves us, and although we shall have trouble and sorrow in this life, we should remember, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to suffer and die on the cross for our sins. He encountered and endured these things on our behalf, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Lord and Savior”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and be available to hear us when we find “trouble, sorrow and death”.

Next time the Psalmist says, “then called I upon the name of the LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
