Return Unto Your Rest, O My Soul - Psalms 116:7

In Psalms one hundred sixteen the Psalmist said, “The LORD preserves the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me”, and in chapter one hundred sixteen and verse seven of Psalms the Psalmist said, “return unto your rest, O my soul” where we read,

Return unto your rest, O my soul; for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you.

The verse begins with the words, Return unto your rest, O my soul;. The Psalmist began with the word, “return” or “turn about, go or come back” “unto your rest” which means “to your, the Psalmist's, quiet, repose, peace, ease and consolation”, “O my soul” or “O my, the Psalmist's, heart, mind, will, desires, living being and seat of emotions and passions”. The Psalmist called upon his own heart, mind and will to go back to it's comfortable and peaceful state.

The verse goes on to say, “for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you.” The Psalmist continued with the words, “for the LORD” or “because, since and on account that Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “has dealt bountifully” which means “has recompensed, requited and done good” “with you” or “among you, the Psalmist's, soul”. The Psalmist shared how Jehovah God recompensed and did good unto his heart, mind and will.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist began to speak to himself as he beckoned his heart and mind to be at peace. The reason he gave was because Jehovah God recompensed and did him good. God loved the Psalmist, and He loves us. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and do good to our “souls” all the days of our life.

Next time the Psalmist says, “you have delivered my soul from death”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
