The LORD Preserves the Simple - Psalms 116:6

In Psalms one hundred sixteen the Psalmist said, “Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yes, our God is merciful”, and in chapter one hundred sixteen and verse six of Psalms the Psalmist said, “the LORD preserves the simple” where we read,

The LORD preserves the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me.

The verse begins with the words, The LORD preserves the simple:. The Psalmist began with the words, “the LORD” or “Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “preserves” which means “keeps, observes, gives heed to, watches, regard and saves” “the simple” or “naive, foolish and open-minded people”. The Psalmist shared how Jehovah God watches over and saves people who are naive and open-minded.

The verse continues, “I was brought low, and he helped me.” The Psalmist added the words, “I was brought low” or “I, the Psalmist, was emptied, languished, distressed and made weak”, “and he helped me” which means “and he, Jehovah God, succored, gave aid to and assisted me, the Psalmist”. The Psalmist shared how Jehovah God gave assistance to him when he was distressed and made weak.

When we think through the Psalmist's words in this verse, we learn how Jehovah God watches over and regards people who are uncomplicated, plain and naive. The Psalmist himself was made weak, and Jehovah God gave him assistance. Jesus said, “every one that exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted” (See Luke 18:14), and God is able to make anyone who boasts in themselves to be “brought low”. Our confidence should be in Jehovah God who sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Lord and Savior”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us aid and assistance when we are humbled before Him.

Next time the Psalmist says, “return unto your rest, O my soul”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
