A Man Kneeling Before Jesus - Matthew 17:14

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus', “disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. Then the disciples understood that he spoke unto them of John the Baptist”, and in chapter seventeen and verse fourteen of his book, Matthew shares how, “a certain man” came to Jesus “kneeling down to him” where we read:

And when they were come to the multitude,

there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,

The verse reads, And when they were come to the multitude, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “and when” or “at that time and moment” “they were come” or “Jesus and His disciples approached and appeared” “to the multitude” or “to the crowd and mass gathering of people”. Matthew shared how Jesus and His disciples approached another crowd of people.

The verse goes on to say, ... there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, Matthew continued with the words, “there came” or “there approached and appeared” “to him” which refers to “Jesus” “a certain man” which means “a certain male human being”, “kneeling down” or “falling upon His knees imploring aid and of expressing reverence and honor” “to him” which means “to Jesus”, “and saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”. Matthew shared how a “man” came to Jesus, fell upon his knees and began to speak to Him.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus and His disciples approached this group of people and another man came to Him, prostrated Himself and began to make a request of Jesus. This implies Jesus' reputation preceded Him wherever He went, and when people knew He was coming their way, like this particular man, they would worship Him and make their request in faith that He was able to do whatever they desired. God loves this kind of faith, and when people yield their lives to Him through His Son Jesus, He promises to meet their need and provide them with everlasting life.

Next time Matthew shares how the man cried out to Jesus, “Lord, have mercy on my son, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
