Elijah the Restorer - Matthew 17:11

Matthew the apostle wrote how Peter, James and John saw Jesus transfigured upon a mountain, and “as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead. And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?”, and in chapter seventeen and verse eleven of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus answered His disciples, “Elijah truly shall first come, and restore all things” where we read:

And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

The verse reads, And Jesus answered and said unto them, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “and Jesus answered” or “and Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate responded” “and said” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” which means “to the disciples”. Matthew shared how Jesus “responded” to the disciples question concerning “Elijah coming first”.

The verse continues, ... Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. Matthew added the word, “Elias” or “Elijah whose name means my God is Jehovah” “truly” which means “surely and indeed” “shall first come” or “will arise and appear beforehand and previous to”, “and restore” or “and reconstitute” “all things” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the things which exist”. Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples Elijah would precede the Messiah with the task of “reconstituting” everything that exists.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus knew the scriptural prophesy concerning “Elijah”, and He affirmed that His task was to “restore” everything to it's proper order. God desires an orderly, loving and personal relationship with every person, and when they yield their lives to Him, they shall know He has a specific order to preclude the coming of the Messiah Jesus who is the “Savior” of the world.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus told His disciples, “Elias is come already, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
