Seeing No One But Jesus - Matthew 17:8

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus said, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. And after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and brought them up into a high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if you will, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear you him. And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid”, and in chapter seventeen and verse eight of his book, Matthew shares after the disciples, “lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only” where we read:

And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.

The verse reads, And when they had lifted up their eyes, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “and when” or “at the time and moment” “they had lifted up” or “the disciples raised up” “their eyes” which means “the disciples' eyes”. Matthew shared how the disciples “raised up their eyes” after Jesus touched them and told them not to be “afraid”.

The verse goes on to say, ... they saw no man, save Jesus only Matthew continued with the words, “they saw” or “the disciples beheld, deceived, perceived, discerned and discovered” “no man” which means “not a person at all”, “save Jesus only” or “except for Jesus alone whose name means Jehovah is Salvation”. Matthew shared how the disciples did not see anyone other than “Jesus” when they raised their eyes after being prostrated upon the ground.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we notice “Moses and Elijah” left Jesus after speaking with Him. The disciples saw Jesus alone again with them on the mountain, and the others were gone. God desires people to know Him through His Son Jesus, and when they submit their lives to Him, no other person needs to be seen to discover salvation for their souls and peace unto everlasting life.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus told His disciples, “tell the vision to no man, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
