Jesus Calls a Little Child - Matthew 18:2

Matthew the apostle wrote how, “the disciples” came “unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”, and in chapter eighteen and verse two of his book, Matthew shares how “Jesus called a little child unto him” where we read:

And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,

The verse reads, And Jesus called a little child unto him, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “and Jesus” or “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “called” which means “bid, summoned and invited”“a little child” or “an infant or small boy or girl ” “unto him” which means “to Jesus Himself”. Matthew shared how Jesus invited a “small child” to come to Him.

The verse continues, ... and set him in the midst of them,”. Matthew added the words, “and set him” or “and put, placed and established the little child” “in the midst” which means “in the middle” “of them” or “of the disciples”. Matthew shared how Jesus put the “little child” directly in the middle of all the disciples.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus was so accessible and congenial that He could invite a small child to join Him and the child would do so. God manifested Himself through His Son Jesus upon the earth, and God desires everyone to come to Him. Jesus will use this child as an example to His disciples, and we shall learn how Jesus wants all who will to “come unto Him”.

Next time we see Matthew share how Jesus said, “except you be converted, and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
