No Bread Taken - Matthew 16:7

Matthew the apostle wrote about Jesus feeding four thousand men plus women and children, and afterward,he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala. The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would show them a sign from heaven. He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, you say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red . And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O you hypocrites, you can discern the face of the sky; but can you not discern the signs of the times? A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed. And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees”, and in chapter sixteen and verse seven of his book, Matthew shares how the disciples “reasoned”, “we have taken no bread” where we read:

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.

The verse reads, “And they reasoned among themselves, saying, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “and they reasoned” which means “and the disciples of Jesus brought together different reasons, resolves and deliberations” “among themselves” or “within their group”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”. Matthew shared how the disciples deliberated among themselves.

The verse goes on to say, ... It is because we have taken no bread. Matthew added the words, “it is because” which means “since and on account that” “we have taken” which means “the disciples carried with them, laid hold of and procured” “no bread” which means “no amount of loaves made of flour mixed with water and baked”. Matthew shared how the disciples realized they forgot to take “bread” with them.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the disciples were once again focused upon “physical things” and not “spiritual”. The Messiah of God was with them, performed miracles before them, and yet, they were concerned about what they would eat. God desires people to “worship Him in spirit and in truth”, and those who are wise shall move their eyes from the “physical” and temporary things and focus upon the eternal “spiritual” ones.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus asked His disciples, “why reason you among yourselves, because you have brought no bread?” come to Jesus again, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
