One Accord in Prayer and Supplication - Acts 1:14

Luke the physician wrote how Jesus' disciples, “returned unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey. And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James”, and in chapter one and verse fourteen of the book of Acts Luke wrote how Jesus' disciples, “continued with one accord in prayer and supplication” where we read:

These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women,

and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

The verse begins, “These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, ...” Luke began with the words, “these all continued with one accord” which means “the disciples of Jesus mentioned by Luke, each, every, the whole and everyone adhered to, persevered and waited constantly with one mind and passion” “in prayer” or “in earnest oration and address to God” “and supplication” which means “and need, indigence, want, privation, penury, seeking, asking and entreaty to God”, “with the women” or “alongside the female human beings who were followers of Jesus”. Luke shared how “all” of Jesus' eleven remaining disciples “waited constantly” int the upper room while making “earnest orations and entreaties” to God.

The verse continues, “... and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.” Luke added the words, “and Mary the mother of Jesus” or “and Mary whose name means their rebellion and was the immediate female progenitor and ancestor of Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate”, “and with his brethren” which means “and alongside his, Jesus, brothers”. Luke shared how Jesus' mother and brothers were also among His disciples and the women who were gathered in “one accord” and “praying and making earnest orations and entreaties” to God.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn what the disciples of Jesus, the women with them and Jesus' Mother, Mary, and His brothers were doing while “waiting” in the “upper room”. Jesus told His disciples to “tarry” in Jerusalem until they received the “promise” of God, and they were “praying and making supplications” to Him while they waited. God had a plan for His disciples, and the timing for their next mission was unknown to them. They were wise to continue in “prayer and supplications” while they waited, and anyone who yields their life to Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and lead step by step through “prayers and supplications” while they wait for their next assignment.

Next time Luke shares how, “Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
