In the book of Daniel, Daniel shared how, “Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits” and “then an herald cried aloud, to you it is commanded” the people to worship it or they “shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. Therefore at that time, when all the people heard the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and all kinds of music, all the people, the nations, and the languages, fell down and worshiped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. Wherefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and accused the Jews”, and in Daniel chapter three and verse nine of his book Daniel shared how the accusers, “spoke and said to king Nebuchadnezzar” where we read,
They spoke and said to the king Nebuchadnezzar, O king, live for ever.
The verse reads, “They spoke and said to the king Nebuchadnezzar, ...” Daniel began with the words, “they spoke and said” or “they, the Chaldean accusers, answered, responded and uttered, declared and proclaimed” “to the king Nebuchadnezzar” which means “to the royal ruler and leader Nebuchadnezzar whose name means 'may Nebo protect the crown' and was the great king of Babylon who captured Jerusalem and carried Judah captive”. Daniel shared how the “Chaldean accusers” began to speak to King “Nebuchadnezzar” by saying the following words.
The verse goes on to say, “... O king, live for ever.” Daniel continued with the words, “O king” which means “O royal ruler and leader”, “live for ever” or “remain and keep alive perpetually, unto perpetuity and eternally”. Daniel said the “Chaldeans” told the royal ruler “King Nebuchadnezzar” to remain alive perpetually.
When we meditate upon Daniel's words in this verse, we discover how the accusing Chaldeans began to speak with King “Nebuchadnezzar” about the Jewish people. Once again there were opponents to the Jews, and even though they were beginning their speaking by complementing the “king”, they will get to the point in our next verse. For now let us be reminded that God was aware of all these details, and they would be used to bring His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and be resurrected from the dead after three days. Because of this, when we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us the wisdom of His Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth whenever we encounter opposition with persuasive words. (See John 16:13)
Next time Daniel shares how the accusers told King Nebuchadnezzar, “you, O king, have made a decree”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
