Paul
the apostle told church members in Corinth, “I
declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also you
have received, and wherein you stand”,
and in
chapter fifteen and verse two of First Corinthians, Paul exhorted the
church members to, “keep in memory what I
preached unto you”, where
we read:
By
which also you are saved, if you keep in memory what I preached unto
you,
unless
you have believed in vain.
The
verse begins, “By
which also you are saved, if you keep in memory what I preached unto
you,...” Paul
began with the words, “by which” or
“through this” “also”
which means “even so and indeed” “you
are saved”
or “the church members are preserved who were in danger of
destruction, rescued and delivered from the penalties of the
Messianic judgment”, “if you keep”
or “whether you hold, detain, retain, keep secure and firm
possession of” “in memory what”
which means “” “I preached”
which refers to “Paul bringing good news, announcing glad tidings
of God's kindness in particular of the Messianic blessings” “unto
you” or
“toward the church members”. Paul shared how the church members
were “saved” as they “kept” the “gospel”
he “preached”
to them.
The
verse continues, “... unless
you have believed in vain.” Paul
added the word, “unless” or
“except” “you have believed”
which means “the church members think to be true, were persuaded
of, credited and placed confidence in” “in
vain” or
“in-considerably, without purpose, just cause, success or effort”.
Paul gave consideration to the fact that some people may have “placed
their confidence” in Jesus “without purpose and in-considerably”.
When
we consider these words from Paul, we see how he refers to the church
members' “salvation” through the “gospel” he
“preached” to them. He gave an exception to some who might
have been among the church members as he referred to those who did
not really consider what they believe. Jesus Christ gives an
invitation to everyone to “receive” Him as their “Savior and
Lord”, and the only exception to His promised “salvation” is
that the person hearing the “gospel” who “believes in vain”.
Next
time Paul tells
the church members,
“Christ
died for our sins according to the scriptures”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
