Paul
the apostle told the church members in Corinth, “except
you utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be
known what is spoken? for you shall speak into the air”,
and in chapter fourteen and verse ten of
First Corinthians, Paul referred to, “there
are...so many kinds of voices in the world”,
where we read:
There
are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of
them is
without signification.
The
verse begins, “There
are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, ...”.
Paul began
with the words, “there are” or
“if and whether”, “it may be”
or “it hits the mark, reaches, obtains and happens”, “so
many kinds”
which refers to “of great quantity and so many families and
offsprings” “of voices”
or “sounds, tones and speeches of language or tongues”
“in the world”
which means “the whole circle of earthly goods, endowments riches,
advantages and pleasures”. Paul noted the “multitude” of
different “voices”
that are within the “earth”.
The
verse continues, “... and
none of them is
without signification.” Paul
continued with the words, “and none
of them”
or “not one single or sole one of them” “is
without”
which means “does not have” “signification”
or “a voice or a faculty of speech”. Paul shared how “none”
of the “voices” within the “earth” are without “a special
faculty of speech”.
When
we consider these words from Paul, he recognized the multitude of
“voices” or “languages” which are in “the world”,
and each of these “languages” have a specific tone or inflection
that is known by those who know the “language”. Like the
“trumpet” that makes “distinct” sounds, “voices”
throughout the world are specific as well. Jesus Christ desires for
the church to be “edified” by the “spiritual gift of
tongues”, however, this “gift” must be employed in a
way that is according to the manner of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord
Jesus through the Holy Spirit teach us concerning “the voices”
that are pleasing to Him.
Next
time Paul tells the church members what happens, “if
I know not the meaning of the voice”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
