Paul
the apostle shared several characteristics of “love” with the the
church members in Corinth, and in chapter
thirteen and verse six of First Corinthians, Paul shared how love,
“rejoices in
the truth”,
where we read:
Rejoices
not in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;
The
verse begins, “Rejoices not in
iniquity,...”.
Paul began
with the word, “Rejoices not”
which means “does not be glad, rejoice exceedingly, be well or
thrive exceedingly” “in iniquity”
or “injustice, unrighteousness or acts thereof”. Paul told the
church members that “love” is not “glad and thriving” when
“injustice and unrighteousness” are present.
The
verse continues, “... but
rejoices in the truth;” Paul
added the word, “but” which
is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be
written takes precedence over what was just stated “rejoices”
or “is glad, rejoice exceedingly, well or thriving exceedingly”
“in the truth” which
means “that which is true in things appertaining to God and the
duties of man in moral and religious truth”. “Love”, according
to Paul, is “glad and thrives” in “what is true appertaining to
God”.
When
we think through these words from Paul, we see how “love” is
“glad” when “truth” avails, but it does not “rejoice”
when “injustice and unrighteousness” is involved. Jesus desires
for those within the church to “be exceedingly glad” when there
is “truth”, and it is not to “rejoice” when
“iniquity” abounds. As we encounter “truth” and
“iniquity”, let us be mindful of the manner of “love”
the Lord Jesus desires for us to exhibit and follow His loving
example over what to “rejoice” within and what to not.
Next
time Paul shares with the church members how love, “bears,
believes, hopes and endures all things”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
