Paul
the apostle instructed the church members in Corinth to, “let
your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto
them to speak”,
and in chapter fourteen and verse
thirty-five of First Corinthians, Paul shared if there was someone
who was “ignorant”
in the church, they were to, “let
him be ignorant”,
where we read:
But if
any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
The
verse begins, “But if any man be
ignorant,...”.
Paul began
with the word, “But” which
is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be
written takes precedence over what was just stated “if
any man”
which means “whether a certain person” “be
ignorant”
which refers to “one who does not know, understand, is mistaken and
wrong”. Paul referred to the person who “does not know about the
“commandments”
of the Lord to which he has proclaimed.
The
verse goes on to say, “...let
him be ignorant.” Paul
continued with the word, “let”
which means
“allow and permit” “him”
or “the ignorant person” “be
ignorant”
which means “as one who does not know, understand, is mistaken and
wrong”. Paul exhorted to allow the “ignorant”
person to continue in their “ignorant”
ways.
When
we think through these words from Paul, we may think it harsh for him
to be this way toward an “ignorant” person. However, the idea is
“obstinate” “ignorance”. This is pertaining to the
person who continually refuses to “know” the truth, and when they
were that rebellious, Paul's instruction was to leave them in their
“ignorant” position. Jesus Christ desires unity and order
in His church, and those who willingly defy the “commandments of
the Lord”, sometimes must be left to themselves. In other
words, “one desires to be in ignorance concerning spiritual things,
let him continue in that way”. Let the Holy Spirit of God lead us
to the truth, and may we always be willing to learn everything the
Lord desires for us to know.
Next
time Paul tells
the church members,
“covet to prophesy, and
forbid not to speak with tongues”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
