Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened.” Jesus continued, “Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do you even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets” and in chapter seven and verse thirteen of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples,“enter you in at the strait gate” where we read:
Enter you in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way,
that leads to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
The verse reads, “Enter you in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, ...” Matthew began with the words, “enter you in” or “the disciples were to come in and make entrance” “at the strait gate” which means “into the access or entrance that is close or narrow” “for wide” which means “because, since and on account that broad and spread out” “is the gate” or “exists the access or entrance”, “and broad” which refers to “spacious” “is the way” or “exists the traveled road, journey and course of conduct”. Jesus told His disciples about two “entrances”. The one is “narrow”, and the other is “spacious” and along with these “gates” there also exists a “spaciously” traveled road and “course of conduct”.
The verse continues, “... that leads to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat.” Matthew added the words, “that leads” or “that brings, carries and put one off” “to destruction” which refers to “toward perishing, ruin, perdition and waste which consists of eternal misery in hell”, “and many there be” or “and there are a large, plenteous and sore group of people” “which go in thereat” which means “who enter, make entrance and arise to the destruction”. Jesus told His disciples the “wide gate” and “broad way” “brings and carries” a multitude of people toward “eternal perishing, perdition and misery”.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see one of the most dreadful verses in the whole Bible. When Jesus shared the “destruction” that is destined for the “multitude” of people who go through the “wide gate” and travel the “wide road”, He provided a great warning for those who “go in” and “travel” upon it. God desires to “save” people from “destruction” through a relationship with His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him, He promises “eternal life” with Him. However, if they reject God and His “narrow way” to “salvation”, they shall find the end of their “wide gate” and “broad way” will be horrific misery and everlasting separation from Him.
Next time Jesus tells His disciples, “strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leads to life”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
