Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, “when you pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not you therefore like unto them: for your Father knows what things you have need of, before you ask him. After this manner therefore pray you: Our Father which are in heaven, Hallowed be your name Your kingdom come. Your will be done in earth, as it is in heaven”, and in chapter six and verse eleven of his book, Jesus told His disciples to pray, “give us … our bread” where we read:
Give us this day our daily bread.
The verse reads, “Give us this day ...” Matthew began with the word, “give us” which means “grant, bestow, supply and furnish to the disciples” “this day” or “this very present and current day”. Jesus added the request for the Heavenly Father to provide each and every “present day”.
The verse goes on to say, “... our daily bread.” Matthew added the words, “our daily bread” which refers to “the disciples' good and sustenance that is of necessity and suffices for each day”. Jesus continued the “request” of God to provide the disciples' daily provision of food.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we find this to be the first personal request within Jesus' prayer. Before asking for “daily bread”, the Heavenly Father was to be recognized, honored and acknowledged for His Kingdom upon “heaven and earth”. God knows the physical needs of people, and when they align themselves with Him through His Son Jesus, they pray in His “perfect will” as they ask for “daily bread”. May all who read these words know the advantage of knowing Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord” and be willing to “pray” for “daily” provision in the manner He has described.
Next time Jesus tells His disciples to pray, “forgive us our debts”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
