Matthew shared how Jesus completed the Sermon on the Mount, and “When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. And, behold, there came a leper and worshiped him, saying, Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” In chapter eight and verse three of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus said to the leper, “I will, be clean” where we read:
And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will;
be clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
The verse reads, “And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will:” Matthew began with the words, “and Jesus” or “and Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “put forth” which means “stretched out and extended” “his hand” or “Jesus' hand”, “and touched him” which means “and fastened Himself to, adhered to, clung to and attached Himself to the leper”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “I will” or “Jesus intends to, desires, wishes, loves and takes delight in” cleansing the leper. Jesus was delighted to extend His hand, touch the leper and declared His desire to cleanse the leper.
The verse continues, “be clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.” Matthew added the words, “be clean” or “exist and cleanse”. “And immediately” which means “and straightaway, shortly and forthwith” “his leprosy” or “the leper's most offensive, annoying, dangerous, cutaneous disease and the virus of which generally pervades the whole body which is common in Egypt and the East” “was cleansed” which means “was made clean, free from defilement, purified and purged”. Jesus touched the “leper” and “straightaway” he was made “clean” from his “leprosy”.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus had the power and ability to “clean” the “leper” from His “leprosy”. We remember that “leprosy” is a type of “sin” in the Bible, and in the same manner that Jesus was easily able to remove “leprosy” from the “leper”, He is also able to remove “sin” from the “sinner”. That is why He came, and when a person yields their life to God through Jesus Christ His Son, their “sin” is removed and they are made “clean”.
Next time Matthew shares how, “Jesus said unto him, see that you tell no man”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
