Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? and in your name have cast out devils? and in your name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity. Therefore whosoever hears these sayings of mine, and does them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that hears these sayings of mine, and does them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand”, and in chapter seven and verse twenty-seven of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples how the house on the sand,“fell: and great was the fall of it” where we read:
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew,
and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
The verse reads, “And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, ...” Matthew began with the words, “and the rain” or “and the besprinkling, watering, heavy shower and violent rainstorm” “descended” which means “came, fell and was cast down from the upper regions of the air”, “and the floods came” or “and the torrents, current and running waters arose, came forth, showed themselves and appeared” “and the winds blew” or “the violent agitations and streams of air that are very strong and tempestuous”. Jesus shared how a “torrential rains, rising waters and massive gales” came upon the house built upon the “sand”.
The verse goes on to say, “... and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.” Matthew continued with the words, “and beat” or “and fell down and rushed” “upon that house” which means “on the house built upon the sand”; “and it fell” or “and the house upon the rock descended from a higher place to a lower, perished, came to an end, disappeared or ceased”: “and great” which means “and massive and large” “was the fall of it” or “was the descending from a higher place to a lower, perishing, coming to an end, disappearance and ceasing of the house”. Jesus shared how a “storm” descended upon the house built upon the “sand” and it “fell” because of it's weak foundation..
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the foundation upon which a person builds their life makes a difference in how they weather the storms that are certain to come. Those who have built their lives upon “Jesus' sayings” have a “firm and solid” foundation, and all others have “weak” foundations that are certain to bring down the “house” when the “torrents and tempestuous winds” arrive. God desires for every person to have a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they submit their lives to Him and His teachings, they will have a “strong foundation” that is able to withstand every “storm” and “difficulty” that comes their way.
Next time Matthew shares how the people responded, “when Jesus had ended these saying”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
