Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples, “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? and in your name have cast out devils? and in your name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity. Therefore whosoever hears these sayings of mine, and does them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock”, and in chapter seven and verse twenty-five of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus told His disciples how the house built on a rock,“fell not” where we read:
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew,
and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
The verse reads, “And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, ...” Matthew began with the words, “and the rain” or “and the besprinkling, watering, heavy shower and violent rainstorm” “descended” which means “came, fell and was cast down from the upper regions of the air”, “and the floods” or “and the torrents, current and running waters” “came” or “arose, came forth, showed themselves and appeared”, “and the winds blew” which refers to “the violent agitations and streams of air that are very strong and tempestuous ”. Jesus shared how a “torrential rains, rising waters and massive gales” came upon the house built upon the “solid rock”.
The verse goes on to say, “... and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.” Matthew added the words, “and beat” or “and fell down and rushed” “upon that house” which means “on the house built upon a rock”; “and it fell not” or “and the house upon the rock did not descend from a higher place to a lower, perish, come to an end, disappear or cease”: “for” which means “because, since and on account that” “it was founded” or “the solid rock house was established, settled and erected” “upon a rock” which refers to “on a large stone which is firm and and strong”. Jesus shared how a “storm” descended upon the house built upon a “solid rock” and it did not “fall” because of it's strong foundation.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how important it is to build our lives upon the “solid rock” of Jesus' words. “Storms” descend upon our lives, and whether we stand or fall will be determined by the “foundation” upon which we have built. God desires every person to have a “strong foundation” in their lives through His Son Jesus Christ, and those who yield their lives to Him and hear and obey His words have a “solid foundation” upon which a “torrential storm” in their lives shall never prevail.
Next time Jesus tells His disciples what happens to, “every one that hears these sayings of mine, and does them not”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
