Matthew shared, “when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them.” He continued, “When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils:
and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick. That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.” Matthew continued, “Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side. And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow you wherever you go”, and in chapter eight and verse twenty of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus told the scribe He, “has not where to lay his head” where we read:
And Jesus said unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests;
but the Son of man has not where to lay his head.
The verse reads, “And Jesus said unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests;” Matthew began with the words, “and Jesus said” or “and the One whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “unto him” which means “to the scribe who said he would follow Jesus wherever He goes”, “the foxes” or “the animals known as foxes” “have holes” which means “live in burrows, lurking holes or lairs”, “and the birds” or “the flying winged fowls” “of the air” which refers to “the vaulted expanse of the sky with all things visible in it ” “have nests” or “perches, places of tarrying, encampments and abodes”. Matthew shared how Jesus referred to the “foxes who have burrows” and the birds” who have “nests” as he answered the “scribe” who told him he would follow Him.
The verse goes on to say, “but the Son of man has not where to lay his head.” Matthew continued with the word, “but” or “moreover and” “the Son of man” which means “the descendant, posterity and offspring of human beings and individuals” “has not where” or “does not have somewhere or a place” “to lay” which means “to incline, bow and recline” “his head” or “Jesus' head”. Matthew shared how Jesus said He did not have a place to “lay down” His “head”.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus told the “scribe” that He didn't have a “place” to lay down His “head”. In other words, Jesus was essentially “homeless”. Jesus had no place “to lay his head” down, and the “scribe” who said he would “follow” him wherever he went had no idea of that which he was volunteering. God knows there will be a cost for “following” Him and His Son Jesus, and those who are wise shall “count the cost” for doing so.
Next time Matthew shares how a disciple says to Jesus, “Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
