Peter's Mother in Law with a Fever Matthew 8:14

Matthew shared how Jesus saw the “great faith” of the centurion and said, “I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go your way; and as you have believed, so be it done unto you. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.” In chapter eight and verse fourteen of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus went into Peter's house, and“he saw” Peter's “wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever” where we read:

And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever.

The verse reads, And when Jesus was come into Peter's house ... Matthew began with the words, “and when” or “at the time and moment” “Jesus” which refers to “the One whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of the world and God incarnate” “was come” or “arose, appeared and entered” “Peter's house” which refers to “the dwelling place and habitation of Jesus' disciple whose name means a rock or a stone”. After sending the word to heal the centurion's servant, Jesus went to the home of Peter who was his disciple.

The verse goes on to say, ... he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever.” Matthew continued with the words, “he saw” or “Jesus perceived, noticed, discerned and discovered” “his wife's mother” which means “Peter's mother-in-law” “laid” or “lying down”, “and sick of a fever” which literally means “to be on fire” and refers to a person with a body temperature above that which is normal. Matthew shared how Jesus looked upon Peter's mother-in-law who was ill with a high temperature in her body.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see yet another example of a person who was in need of healing. As Matthew attempts to show the Jewish people that Jesus is the Messiah, he shared how Jesus healed the “leper”, the “centurion's servant”, and now Jesus notices that Peter's mother-in-law has a “fever”. God is all knowing and all powerful, and He is able to cure any sickness that may come upon people. He desires a relationship with people through His Son Jesus, and as Jesus demonstrates His power over and over again, all who are reading these words should take notice of the Creator God and His ability not only to discover ill-health, but also to conquer any sickness and disease that may come upon them.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus went into Peter's house and, “he touched her hand, and the fever left her, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
